Who we are
SafeBite ("the app", "we", "us") is an iOS utility that reads the ingredient label on packaged food using your camera and on-device text recognition, then checks the recognized text against the allergens you save in a profile. This policy explains how the app handles your information.
Data we collect
None. SafeBite does not collect personal data. Specifically:
- We do not upload your photos, scans, recognized label text, profiles, or scan history anywhere — they stay on your device.
- We do not require an account, sign-in, or any personal information to scan.
- We do not include third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
- We do not track you across apps or websites.
Camera access
To read a label, SafeBite asks your permission to use the camera. Camera frames are used solely to capture and recognize the ingredient text on your device using Apple's on-device Vision framework. No image or recognized text is ever sent off your device, and images are not saved unless you explicitly save a scan to your local history.
Allergen database updates
SafeBite ships with a built-in allergen dictionary and can periodically download an updated copy of that public dictionary from our content delivery network so newly reported hidden ingredient names can be added. This update is a one-way download of a public file — no personal data, profile, scan, or label text is ever sent to obtain it, and the app remains fully functional offline using the last copy it has.
Purchases
SafeBite is free to use, with a one-time, non-subscription in-app purchase ("SafeBite Unlimited") that removes the free-scan limit. Purchases and restores are handled entirely by Apple's App Store and StoreKit. We never receive or store your payment details. Apple's handling of transactions is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Not a medical device
SafeBite is an informational tool that helps you read ingredient labels. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, or prevent any condition. It cannot detect hidden cross-contact and can miss allergens. Always read the physical label yourself, and seek immediate medical help in an emergency.
Children's privacy
SafeBite does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
Data retention & security
Because we never collect or transmit your data, there is nothing for us to retain or expose. Your profiles, allergens, and scan history remain on your device under iOS's standard protections, and you can delete them at any time from within the app.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date above.
